Member Activities

The Mixed PROBUS Club of Burlington offers numerous activities to its members - all designed to stimulate the mind or the body. Below is a list and brief description of the activities currently offered. We encourage members who have a passion for a particular activity not listed to poll the organization and if there is enough interest among the members that activity will be actively promoted by the club.

To join in an activity group or to suggest a new group, contact activities chair, Loraine Sanchez.

Armchair Travel

Not travelling very often or you prefer the comforts of home to the uncertainties of new places and cultural differences. Then travel the world virtually with the travelling members of the Mixed Probus Club of Burlington who gather to share their vacation and travel experiences through photos, videos and stories

American Mahjong

American Mahjong is played in members' homes bi-weekly on Friday afternoons.

New

Bocci Ball

It is a mix of bowling, lawn bowling and curling. Very few rules. If you can roll a ball, you can play bocce. Balls are a little smaller than a 5 pin bowling ball and a little lighter. You can have anywhere between 2 - 8 players with 1 set of bocce. A casual get-together with some Probus friends and some exercise.

New

Book Club

The book club is just getting organized. Current planning suggests including a "Pot luck" Supper, Wine and, of course, a  discussion of a book. The group will be limited to 10 participants. If  there is sufficient interest, other groups will form.

Breakfast Club

A group for early risers meets on a monthly basis at a local restaurant to enjoy conversation, laughter and socializing over breakfast.

Community Theatre

This is a group for anyone who loves going to the theatre and who enjoy eating out. Theatre lovers unite to share a meal and an afternoon or evening performance at a theatre/venue usually within a 1 1/2 hour drive from Burlington.

Current Events

Stay current and involved with the world. Members are encouraged to bring their passion and interests for a lively discussion following a friendly prescribed format.

Cycling

Weather permitting from May to October members enjoy exploring nature and getting exercise riding easy to moderate area trails or city streets. We have at least a couple of stops on our rides to "smell the roses" and there is always a stop during or at the end of the ride for socialization over a refreshment. Members on our contact list will receive details of upcoming rides a few days before they take place. We will give you a detailed itinerary, an estimate of the duration and/or distance of each ride as well as the elevation. Helmets are required.

Dining Out

A group of about 20 Club members open to socialization and sampling a variety of food experiences at restaurant in and around Burlington. Restaurants are selected by one of the members on a rotating basis and each club member chooses their own meal and wine from the menu and pays the appropriate cost. Restaurant style varies from family diners to fine dining. No obligation to attend or pick a particular meal. We have several Dining Out groups.

Euchre

The Euchre group meets the 3rd Tuesday of the month, in the afternoon. Welcoming regular players & spares. Regular players are required to find their own spare if unable to attend

Hors d’oeuvres and Libations

This is an in-home group designed for a smaller group of members to socialize and make new friends and engage in a congenial friendly environment. The host will provide coffee, Tea or Water and desert, members will bring Hors d'oeuvres to share and Libation of their choice. We have several such groups.

Kayak

Excursions are planned throughout the region by a group member, each lasting 2 1/2 - 3 hours on area lakes and rivers. Remember it's Bring Your Own Boat. Also, your own Equipment and Transportation.

Lunch Bunch

A friendly social lunch experience at a local restaurant to enjoy conversation and laughter over lunch. Each month a member of the group, on a rotating basis, selects a restaurant, makes a reservation and generally acts as host for the day. All costs for meals and refreshments are the responsibility of each individual.

Lunch Out

Midday dining and social time. The selection of venue is rotated among group members on a monthly basis and the designated host will select the restaurant and make a reservation.

Nibbles and Wine

The group meets in members homes monthly to enjoy wine, nibbles, and friendly conversation. Each attendee/couple brings their own wine and an appetizer for 8 people. The host provides wine glasses, a light desert and coffee or tea. We have several such groups.

International Dining Club

Members meet on the first Tuesday of the month at different international restaurants in the Burlington area. Persian, Thai, Japanese, Greek etc. To ensure cozy chats and loads of laughs table size will be limited to 8 foodies.

9 and Dine - (Golf)

Play nine holes of golf at a selected course and then have dinner often in the club restaurant. Non golfer partners are welcome to arrive after golf and join the group for dinner.

Photography

Our group; enjoys taking and sharing photos, usually via email. Some use cell phones, others use cameras. Some like landscape scenes, some like closeups of flowers and animals, and others like taking photos of people. All of us like taking photos. We have no set meetings. One of us may suggest a location to visit on our own or as a group. The idea: having fun sharing and learning from one another.

Walking

The Walking Club members enjoy each other's company as we tour Burlington and its surrounding area. Most Wednesday mornings from October to May, there are walks that run around one and a half hours. The advantages of walking are well known. Successful ageing is closely tied to the amount of exercise a person gets; it also enables participants to meet new people and keep up relationships with other walkers

Something Else?

The activities groups are member run and are usually driven by the interest of the members. If something other than what is mentioned here ignites your passion; we have an activities chair who will assist you in forming a new group.
