Some Frequently Asked Questions about our Probus club

  • Who can join Probus?

  • Anyone who is semi retired, or retired from their job or business, who have an interest in and appreciation for interacting with like-minded retires.
  • What is the age range?

  • Our current membership ranges from 55 and up
  • Does my spouse/partner need to join too?

  • No, while our club is mixed it is not necessary for your spouse or partner to join. You can join or remain as an individual or with a friend.
  • Do I have to live in Burlington to join?

  • No, while most of our members live in the greater Burlington area, some live in the nearby towns and villages.
  • How often are meetings and where are they held?

  • We hold our regular meetings on the fourth Wednesday of each month except for July and August. We meet at Port Nelson United Church. Our monthly meetings are typically two hours long starting with a socialization period followed by club business and our guest speaker.
  • How much are the annual dues?

  • The cost is $42 per year per person (2024/5) and there is a onetime initiation fee of $20 payable upon joining the club.
  • Do you have any other activities?

  • Besides our monthly meetings, our Mixed PROBUS Club is known for its active and engaged membership in a wide variety of activities such as golfing, dining out groups, cycling, armchair travel and nibbles & wine. There are also special events that take place from time to time. See our website under Activities for further details.
  • Is it compulsory to participate in all activities?

  • No, nor is attendance at meetings compulsory. You make the choice. However it is hoped that once you become a member that you will participate in meetings and/or activities whenever you are able.
  • Does the Club do fundraising activities?

  • No. Our PROBUS Club is non profit, non fund raising.
  • Is the Club part of a wider organization?

  • Mixed PROBUS Club of Burlington is autonomous but is coordinated through PROBUS CANADA.
  • Are all PROBUS clubs the same?

  • Many are very similar. There are men only clubs as well as women only clubs; we are the only MIXED gender PROBUS Club in the greater Burlington area
  • How would I remember members' names?

  • Everyone has a name badge and is encouraged to wear it, also by engaging in activities and forming a social network with members of similar interests.
  • Would I have to join immediately?

  • No, you are welcome to come along to our meetings as a guest until you make your decision. The club rules do limit the number of times a guest or visitor may attend. Non-members cannot normally participate in any of the activity groups or attend any of the Club’s special functions, unless they are an out-of-town guest of a member.
